Playing with bass notes can break up big blocks of strumming. They add detail and melody.

Picking out individual string may seem challneging at first. Accuracy is the biggest hurdle. My advice is to tilt the guitar so you can see all 6 strings instead of one long line. Also keep your strumming hand close to the body.

   

Pattern 6 is very useful. Alternating bass notes can add even more interest to strummed songs.
