Video 47a – Easy Way To Learn ALL The Notes On The Fretboard – Part 1

This looks like a lot of text to take in, but trust me it’s very simple…

Understanding all the notes on the guitar fretboard is ESSENTIAL to your development as a musician.

Not only will you have a greater knowledge of HOW music is put together, you’ll also unlock the theory behind chords, scales and your favourite songs.

How To “HACK” Learning All The Notes On The Fretboard

Learn the open string names first: Starting from the thickets string the rhyme is: Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie

On the E string the 3rd, 5th and 7th fret spell out G A B

Learn the musical alphabet off by heart. It’s only 12 notes. A – A# – B – C – C# – D – D# – E – F – F# – G – G#

If you keep going up though the alphabet when you get to G# you will go full circle and return to A again.

EASY WAY TO REMEMBER THE ALPHABET >>> There are no sharps (#) between B + C and E + F.

To find any note on the fretboard, work out what the name of the open string is. If you’re pressing down the 3rd fret on the G string, you know the open string is called G. Then work your way up the musical alphabet by three steps (the same as the three frets) starting at G. So you’d go 1st fret = G# 2nd fret = A and third fret = A#.

You can use this same method for any note on the fretboard.

To speed up how quickly you can identify notes on the fretboard use an App called FRETESTER. Here’s the link…
